Description

Mrenda, also known by various names such as Mulukhiyah, Mloukhiya, and Molohiya, is a highly nutritious vegetable cherished by communities worldwide. Renowned for its unique texture, it cooks into a thick, mucilaginous consistency similar to okra and is often characterized by a slightly bitter flavor.

How to Prepare:

In Kenya, this vegetable is known as Mrenda. To prepare it, the leaves are carefully picked from the stems and cooked whole without chopping. Some people add milk during cooking to mellow the natural bitterness of this flavorful delicacy. Mrenda is particularly popular among communities in the Western and Nyanza provinces and is traditionally served alongside ugali, a polenta-like dish made from white maize.
